Empirical Corporate Sustainability Research

Bridging ESG Challenges with Data-Driven Research
As global challenges—such as climate change, biodiversity loss, social inequities, and the risks of digital transformation—intensify, corporations, investors, and policymakers are under mounting pressure to integrate Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors into their strategies. But while ESG has become a dominant theme in business and finance, navigating its landscape is not easy. Empirical ESG research is fraught with unique data limitations, methodological hurdles, and competing theoretical perspectives.

This PhD course is designed to help you critically engage with the empirical complexities of corporate sustainability research. Drawing on insights from accounting, economics, finance, and management, we examine the foundations of ESG research, tackle ESG-specific data and econometric challenges, and explore pressing issues, such as (1) climate regulation, corporate decarbonization, and carbon leakage, (2) diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), (3) ESG disclosure and ratings, (4) ESG-based compensation and trade-offs, (5) governance challenges like board representation and gender quotas, CEO duality, and risks of digitalization, as well as (6) sustainable finance and the costs, benefits, and firm performance implications of ESG. Through a rigorous, data and theory-driven approach coupled with an extensive overview of the current research landscape, you’ll gain the skills needed to conduct high-quality ESG research and contribute meaningfully to the ongoing academic and industry debates.

By the end of this course, you will:
  • Master the fundamentals of ESG topics and empirical sustainability research
  • Navigate the latest academic literature on ESG and its theoretical underpinnings
  • Develop expertise in ESG data challenges and applied econometric techniques
  • Critically assess key conceptual and empirical debates in ESG research
  • Refine your econometric, presentation, and discussion skills through in-depth analysis
  • Engage with cutting-edge ESG research and emerging trends
  • Generate new research ideas and contribute to the evolving ESG discourse

This course lays a solid foundation for your own sustainability research and prepares you for a future in academia, policy, or industry—where data-driven ESG insights are more crucial than ever. Join us in unraveling the complexities of corporate sustainability and shaping the next generation of empirical ESG research.
